Warren , AM I still count a lot on Kent's Mechanical Engineer's Handbook from my dad, and my Marks Handbook which was given to me on my 21st birthday with graduation in sight and a career in the offering - and signed by my dad - one of my most treasured possessions.

Joe in NH I just recently acquired an edition of the Marks hand book, 2nd if memory serves me right. There is quite a lot stuff in there. I can see where a engineer would find it very useful. Even us low down dirty welders and mechanics can find good useful understandable information in there too : While I do have a copy of the EBB, I find that in the shop I use the Machinerys handbook or American Machinists handbook from the 40's most often.

Description

And once I have read some more of whats in the Marks book I am sure I will consult it for many things. My last job at a Fortune Architect-Engineering firm was training my replacement - a "new" Syrian engineer in the country on a Green Card - brought to this country by my employer on "gain experience visa. Needless to say he is settling in. It happens. So did my anticipated unemployment. Free enterprise at work.

So I'm training him to the job I was doing and he is quizzing me on the requirements to get a Professional Engineer's License - which I couldn't really coach him on since each state board sets the requirements - although many use the same written exams.

Nor did I have a lot of interest to coach him - he was my "least cost replacement option" for the company. I knew full well what the company had in mind - and why. He brought new meaning to the engineer joke. And I dare say that our "information age" is likely the death knell for engineering as it has been practiced. Handbooks WERE the source of engineering information.

Not so much now.

Of course Engineering Information is one thing - Engineering judgment is another entirely different thing. Employers are not quick to discern the difference. Joe in NH , PM Joe, Sorry to read of your misfortune, it was reading posts from you and Joe Michaels years back that inspired me to go off and try my way at a career as an engineer in the power plants and what I learned when I got there was how damn hard it really is to train a good power plant engineer.

In fact I would venture to guess the reality is that training a plant engineer in any type of plant is one of the hardest things to learn how to do well. We have this issue where I work too as the machines we build are overseen by plant engineers at the customer's facility, but the reality is once a really expensive machine goes into production where it is earning several times your annual salary every day it runs no one in their right mind wants you to touch the damn thing and or do anything that may risk bringing it off line!Today, we use the conversion factor of 1 Horse power equals to 33, ft-lbs per minute.
